My Favorite Christmas Cookie: Iced Raisin Cookies (and Why They’re the Best!)

Ho ho ho!

With the holidays still months away, my mind is already wandering to all the wonderful smells and tastes of Christmas. And right at the top of my list?

A warm plate of iced raisin cookies.

Yes, you read that right — not chocolate chip (though those are wonderful too), but soft, spiced raisin cookies topped with a sweet white icing. There’s just something about that perfect blend of chewy raisins, warm spices, and that tangy-sweet glaze that feels like a big hug from the North Pole.

I’ve been portraying Santa since 1975, and over nearly 50 years of visiting families across the Bay Area and Central Coast, I’ve sampled more than my fair share of cookies left out by the fireplace. Some kids go all out with elaborate sugar cookies or gooey chocolate ones, and I appreciate every single one. But when I see those iced raisin cookies, my eyes light up under these spectacles. They remind me of the simpler, heartwarming treats from years gone by — the kind that fill the house with that cozy holiday aroma.

Here in California, we have our own special twist on the holidays with sunny days mixed in with twinkling lights and crackling fireplaces. These cookies feel just right — not too heavy, full of flavor, and perfect with a cold glass of milk (or maybe even a cup of hot cocoa on those rare chilly evenings in Aromas or Watsonville).

What about you? I’d love to hear from families, parents, and fellow holiday enthusiasts in California:

  • What is your favorite Christmas cookie?
  • Do you have a family tradition around baking or leaving cookies for Santa?
  • Have you ever tried iced raisin cookies, or is there another classic that steals the show at your house (oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodles, gingerbread, or something completely different)?

Leave a comment below and tell me all about it! I read every single one, and it brings me extra joy knowing what makes your family’s Christmas special. Who knows — your favorite might even inspire a future visit or story here on the blog.

In the meantime, if you’re planning your 2026 holiday gatherings and want a real-beard Santa who truly loves the magic (and the cookies!), head over to Santa4California.com to learn more about booking a visit for your home, party, or event.

Wishing you plenty of baking, laughter, and holiday cheer,
